A FIRE officer assisting in the rescue of a dog from St Helens Canal had to be rushed straight to hospital after the animal bit him on the arm. The sub-officer from St Helens was given a tetanus injection and treated for lacerations to his left hand at Whiston Hospital following the incident, which happened near the 'burgies' at 6.30pm on Sunday, August 13. The dog was eventually pulled out of the water but it is unknown whether it was a stray or belonged to someone.
