I READ in the Guinness Book of Movie Facts and Feats that the first Cinema organ in Britain was built by Jardine and Co to the specification of organist George Tootell in 1913 and installed in the Palace Cinema, in Abbey Street, Accrington.

I am 52 now, but when I left school at 15 my first job was at Melia's grocery in Blackburn. Some days , I had to help out at their modern supermarket in Accrington, which used to be the Palace.

As a 15-year-old, I could not resist sneaking upstairs to see what was left of the old days -- not very much, I am afraid, just bits of wood where I think the seats used to go.

What happened to the cinema's organ? Was it smashed up for scrap, or sold and moved somewhere else?

ADRIAN GRADY, Lemonius Street, ACCRINGTON.

Footnote: The organ was sold in 1934 to Hapton Methodist Church, where it remained for more than 40 years until it was scrapped when the building was demolished to make way for the M65 motorway -- Editor.
