A MOTHER was shocked and surprised when she woke in the morning to find her estranged husband in bed beside her.

Burnley Magistrates heard how June Valentine had no idea Peter Lewis Valentine was there, but told him to leave. She later arrived home after a party to find him upstairs in bed again and a piece of the front door missing.

Valentine, 47, of Hollingreave Road, a painter and decorator, admitted destroying a glass window and was conditionally discharged for 12 months.

He must pay £20 compensation and £75 costs.

Andy Robinson, prosecuting, said the defendant and his wife were going through divorce proceedings.

She had gone out with their daughter and afterwards went home and went to bed. In the morning, she awoke to find the defendant beside her.

Later, there was a party for the daughter's 18th and Valentine attended and discussed the divorce with his wife. He told her she had two choices- either she went home with him or he would 'put her windows in' and go in anyway.

Mrs Valentine went home afterwards and found a small pane of glass in the front door missing. She found the television was switched on, although it had been off when she left.

When she went upstairs, she found the defendant in bed again.

Mr Robinson said Valentine told police he had been drunk, but knew what he was doing.

The defendant told the court he was extremely sorry for what he had done. He had been a little bit depressed and had taken to drink over the weekend. He said it would not happen again.
