A FORMER bomber is trying to trace the Ribble Valley pilot who saved his life in 1942.

John Goldby, 77, was on a mission to Turin, Italy, on December 11 when his Halifax bomber caught fire shortly after take-off from Linton-on-Ouse.

The eight-man crew were forced to release a 1,000lb bomb over Flixton Carr before the pilot managed to carefully ditch the aircraft in the sea off Bempton. Miraculously, the crew escaped unharmed and were picked up by a rescue dinghy in Filey.

Mr Goldby, who now lives in Kent, returned to the area with his former squadron for a reunion. Now he wants to trace pilot officer K T Watson, or members of his family, from Clitheroe. Send any information to him in writing at 11 Phoenix Drive, Keston, Kent, BR2 8HS.
