A TEAM of dedicated cyclists pedalled off from Blackpool's most famous tourist attraction this week to raise money for a kidney charity.

The Tower to Tower Cycle Challenge, a marathon bike ride between Blackpool Tower and the Eiffel Tower this September, aims to raise £40,000 for the National Kidney Research Fund.

Twenty nine men and women aged between 15 and 67 will take six days to complete the 500-mile route which will go through Lancashire, Staffordshire, Oxfordshire and Sussex before crossing the Channel to Dieppe.

The money raised will go towards funding vital research work into kidney disease and providing invaluable support to kidney patients and their families.

John Scott, who had a kidney transplant in 1997, is taking part in the ride. Before he set off, he said: "Tower to Tower really captured my imagination and I'm looking forward to rising to the challenge. I'm sure some days will be pretty tough and by the end of the six days I will be fairly exhausted, but I think the sense of achievement that I get when I reach the Eiffel Tower will make it all worth while."
