FLEETWOOD'S Pocket Park is all set to receive a splash of colour on Saturday (September 9) when four striking murals are unveiled in the town.

And it's all thanks to 15-year-old Christopher Martin, from Cardinal Allen High School, who won a competition to design a mural on the theme of "Fleetwood's Future".

All Fleetwood schools were invited to take part in the competition and pupils were asked to design the mural depicting any aspect of the town -- either industrial, social or cultural.

All the entries were exhibited at Fleetwood's Marine Hall, and Christopher's design took the top prize, after which it was transformed by local visual artist Helen Callaghan into the four 8ft by 4ft murals.

Heather Fox, arts development officer for Wyre Borough Council, said Christopher's colourful and creative design includes the lighthouse, Fleetwood's fishing industry and various sports and young people's activities. She said it was chosen by judges from the Council, Rotary Club, Fleetwood Regeneration Partnership and Mr and Mrs Fog, who own the wall where the murals will be displayed..

Heather said: "This has been a great opportunity for young people to make a positive contribution to the regeneration of the town and will be a fitting tribute to this.

"Competitions like this really make a statement about the creativity and talents of young people across Wyre."

Wyre's deputy mayor, Coun David Bannister, will help Christopher with the unveiling of the murals on Saturday morning, along with Mr Bob Gardener, president of the Rotary Club of Fleetwood.

Mr Gardener said: "The murals are excellent and we are pleased to have part funded the materials for them. Christopher's design and Helen Callaghan's interpretations are very impressive."
