I AM writing in response to the letter from E. Dixon of the political group First Alliance. After ranging over the subjects of CCTV car park security and homes for the elderly, he then states that he strongly feels Councillor Bancroft and other Labour councillors should resign and let the electors judge them on their efforts since the May 4 elections.

It is a rather silly suggestion and would result in elections every three months. You judge a council or a government on its performance over the full term.

It is however a rather surprising remark to come from an ex-councillor. Mr Dixon was elected to Blackpool Council as a Conservative in May, 1997, for a three-year term. Part way through his term, after a disagreement with his colleagues, he resigned from the Conservative Party, but NOT from the council. He remained an Independent Conservative, totally and completely ignoring the fact that he was not elected as that. It seems to me that this new political group is made up of members who can only be described as malcontents. The suggestion that libraries will be axed and education cut shows just how out of touch they are. Both these have been improved and CCTV is to be placed in the car parks as The Citizen reported.

Blackpool has greatly improved over the past few years during the stewardship of Coun Taylor and Coun Bancroft -- one only needs to walk around the town centre. The council has now been successful in obtaining new government grants. Blackpool's future is now much brighter. Give credit where it is due.
