A MAN was killed when he stumbled into the path of a train as he was crossing a railway line.
The 50-year-old local man, who has not been formally identified, was on the track at the Hard Platts, Nelson, when he was struck by the train which was heading towards the town's station.
Sergeant Alan Warden, of the transport police, said: "It appears the man staggered and slipped on the line side into the path of the train.
"The accident is still under investigation."
The death is not being treated as suspicious.
The accident happened near a pedestrian cross-over which allows people to walk from nearby Manchester Road across the single track line to the Hard Platts, a large open grassed area.
East Lancashire coroner David Smith has been informed and an inquest is expected to be held shortly.
The accident happened at 9.35pm on Saturday and involved the Preston-Colne train.
There was some disruption to late-night services on the line.
