I WONDER how the people of our town would feel if, week after week, we were invaded by hordes of drunken foreign thugs roaming around our streets, insulting people, using the pavements as toilets, vomiting and fornicating in any place that suited them.

I recently went to the beautiful island of Majorca for the first time. As we left Palma airport, the tour guide pointed out the sights to us -- the most memorable landmark was the building which he told us was Palma prison. He said it was home to a large number of English tourists who had visited the island in July and August and who were still serving time for their anti social activities.

While staying on the island, I met a young local woman who was a taxi driver. Her experiences of the English tourist were of drunken thugs insulting local people. She told me that until the streets of Magaluf had been washed each day it was impossible to drive with the car window open because of the stench of vomit.

She went on to tell me that her father had been a taxi driver and while working one day, four drunken Englishmen had thrown a beer bottle at the taxi driver in front of him.

Her father got out of his cab to help his friend but as he ran along the pavement he suffered a heart attack and fell to the floor, as he lay there defenceless the yobs turned on him and kicked him to death.

She was 15 at the time. Her family lost the breadwinner and was sent into turmoil. Little wonder they have no time for the English.

Recently we witnessed the spectacle of convicted gangland murderer Reggie Kray's funeral, attended by thousands of London Eastenders with tributes from film and TV personalities and reported by every newspaper and television station in the country.

We have an opposition leader who brags about the vast amount of beer that he can drink. He also tells us that we should be proud to be British, but looking at this track record I can't see much to make me feel proud.
