POLICE, ambulance and fire crews were called to the banks of the Leeds Liverpool canal amid fears people were trapped inside a sinking car.
Youngsters playing on the banks of the canal near to Express Gifts in Church called police after spotting a Ford Escort in the canal, still with its headlights on, at 7pm.
A spokesman for Accrington Fire Station said: "We used our ladders to get to the vehicle because we thought there may have been people trapped.
"We didn't find anybody and we later discovered the car had been stolen from Haslingden."
