TWO Bury Grammar School pupils have been suspended after a seventh year student admitted buying cannabis from another boy.

The 17-year-old found in possession of the substance has also been cautioned by police.

Both he and an 18-year-old pupil, who sold the cannabis to him, have been suspended until headteacher Mr Keith Richards decides what further action to take.

Acting on a tip-off on Friday (Oct 13), Mr Richards interviewed the 17-year-old who admitted buying the cannabis outside the school. He voluntarily produced the substance.

The boy who sold him the cannabis was also interviewed before Mr Richards called their parents and the police.

He has defended the school's hard line on drugs, despite recent calls to dicriminalise cannabis and to ease punishments for possession.

"We've always had a tough policy where there have been any attempts to introduce drugs into our school," said Mr Richards.

"That tough policy will be maintained. Possession and supply of cannabis is illegal."

Mr Richards stressed that Bury Grammar School had a duty to parents and emphasised there would be no moderation in his stance.

"We have had very few problems as regards drugs in this school," he added. "But when there are problems, we have got to be seen to be decisive."
