Tranmere Rovers Reserves 1, Burnley Reserves 2

THE Clarets' young second string ended Tranmere's unbeaten start to the season with two early goals at Prenton Park to climb to second place in the Avon Insurance League Premier Division.

Burnley were quick out of the blocks and Anthony Shandran had already had a header saved by John Achterberg when they took a fifth-minute lead through John Williamson.

The defender swept home a deep Alex Kevan corner and another Kevan corner produced the second goal 15 minutes later when Shandran eluded his marker to head home at the near post.

Brad Maylett went close to adding a third as his shot was blocked by Graham Allen beforeTranmere pulled one back just before the break when Alan Morgan cracked home a long-range drive.

Substitute keeper Andy Paxton then saved well from former Blackburn midfielder Wayne Gill early in the second half but the Clarets could have added a third as they secured an excellent victory.

Dean West flashed a shot just wide from 25 yards and Shandran went close to adding to his tally when he fired against the inside of a post 20 minutes from time.
