Keen to strengthen in midfield, Waywell has checked out the availabity of 35-years-old Thompson who is currently playing with Halifax in Division Three.

"I can sign midfielders for fun but I'm waiting for the right one," says Waywell. "I won't be doing anything until the right player becomes available. I have made a tentative enquiry for Steve Thompson but nothing will happen at the moment."

If Leigh do land Thompson he will join the other ex-Wanderers at Hilton Park, Dave Felgate and Andy Mason.

Waywell must shuffle his side for tomorrow's test trip to Chester City with midfield pair Dave Ridings and Ged Kielty missing through suspension. The one-match bans are likely to give chances to the likes of Mick Devenney and Neil Durkin.

Unbeaten in seven games, RMI know they face a stiff challenge at the Deva Stadium tomorrow against a Chester side eager to reclaim their Football League status after last season's relegation.

"We've taken points off the Conference big guns Hereford and Rushden & Diamonds so far this season, so there's no reason why we can't go to Chester and get a result," says Waywell.

Chester, managed by former Rochdale and Wigan boss Graham Barrow, have moved up into third place but are only one point ahead of RMI who lie in seventh spot.
