SLACK defending by Pennington was heavily punished last Saturday in a Manchester League Premier Division 3-0 home defeat by Mitchell Shackleton.

On the plus side for the Howe Bridge outfit the playing surface was near perfect despite the horrendous midweek weather, obviously benefiting from not being used for three weeks.

Play in the opening stages was rather scrappy but the visitors soon got the upper hand as they capitalised on two defensive errors.

The damage could have been worse in that opening 45 minutes but for two quality blocks in one-on-one situations from goalkeeper Peter Doohan and at the other end Pennington striker Clark Dobson twice went close to reducing the arrears.

The second half saw Steve Cooney's side geared up to chase the game but all hope was lost when another error at the back, this time from a corner, gifted the visitors a third goal.

Doohan was named as Letters Inn man of the match with Stuart Stott another outstanding contender.

Pennington Reserves are on the lookout for new players as their early season troubles continued with a 7-0 drubbing at East Manchester. The team is managed by the vastly experienced Micky Hardman. Any current Under 17 or 18 sides who play on Sundays but who are looking to the future and a link with a big Saturday outfit would be more than welcome. Contact Nicky Richardson on 01942 811461.
