ATHERTON Colls went down to a 2-0 NWCL Division One defeat at Salford City last night. But certainly battled hard against one of the best teams in the league.

The opening goal for the Salford side came on 20 minutes, when former Radcliffe Boro striker Tony Carroll pounced to make the most of a defensive lapse in the Colls defence.

The second goal came on 65 minutes, with a ricochet which wrong-footed the Atherton goalkeeper.

Colls best chances of the game came when Mark Jones crossed, and Darren Maloney brought a tremendous save out of the home keeper, and two minutes from time when Jones himself went through only to find the Salford custodian again equal to the challenge.

Man of the Match for Colls was Mike Wolstenholme on his debut, with Paul Cox in the back four another close contender.

The game was the first with manager Chris O'Brien at the helm, and he must have been most impressed with the spirit and fight he saw from his players.
