PRESTON'S Liberal Democrat group have written to Tesco bosses seeking urgent top level talks about their proposals to axe the Fishergate store.

The initiative comes after bosses announced that the store is to close next year with the lease for the building already sold to American fashion giant GAP.

In a letter to Tesco's chief executive, councillor and group leader Bill Chadwick, says he firmly believes that regional and national managers should reconsider their decision.

Councillor Chadwick has also asked for Tesco to confirm that the existing Preston store is profitable and enjoys a good reputation throughout the company.

He also wrote to ask for a series of meetings to discuss issues regarding the closure. In his letter, councillor Chadwick said: "I know there are many people in Preston who are shocked and angry at the decision to close the Metro store.

"This popular store serves elderly people, single parents and students and we have raised a petition of protest which several local businesses surrounding your company have taken."

He added: "Obviously, the existing contract with GAP may prevent the utilisation of the store, but I seriously believe there are other places in Preston where you could relocate -- particularly in the town centre. Tesco have enjoyed enormous goodwill from the people of Preston and it is important that this is not evaporated."

A spokesperson for Tesco's said: "We will consider a meeting to explain the circumstances surrounding the issue, but obviously the deal has been done with GAP."
