A BOGUS official stole a pensioner's £6,000 life savings after claiming to be from the electricity board.

The thief accosted the pensioner as he stood with a bag of shopping outside his flat in Henry Street, Church.

After telling the man to go upstairs to his flat, the thief followed him up and searched his home.

He then returned to the pensioner and demanded money from him for work he said he had done on electrical sockets.

After being offered £70 the thief got angry and the pensioner, fearing for his safety, handed over his life-savings of £6,000.

Police described the thief as a stocky white man, aged between 40 and 50, 5ft 8ins to 5ft 10ins. He was about 14 or 15 stones in weight with wrinkly facial skin. He was wearing blue trousers and a blue workman's jacket with a large pocket on the chest.

Police have urged residents to ask for identification when approached by people claiming to be officials. Anyone with information on the theft should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
