I MUST respond to the letter from Mr B. S. Hart (Oct 27) regarding the proposed Waterside development in Summerseat.

As we live in the same row of cottages as Mr Hart, higher up Hill Street, I would like to make it clear that we are definitely not all in favour of the Waterside closure, or the additional proposed development. In fact two houses, out of the seven on the row, voted at last Thursday's meeting to fight the proposed development.

I would add that the last year has seen a marked improvement in the management of the Waterside: we have seen it change to a responsibly-run establishment which has got rid of the yob element.

It is without doubt the focal point of the village. It has appeal to most people and particularly to railway enthusiasts, walkers or local people who want to use it for a drink or a meal. This is a Grade Two listed building which will be changed forever if we allow this to happen.

It is an appalling thought that a "fast buck" merchant should be allowed to move in, causing major disturbance to this local beauty spot situated in a conservation area. The developers will eventually move on, leaving the residents with an unsightly group of buildings bang in the middle of houses of some historic significance.

The sewerage system is already overstretched and throughout the year we have had to make repeated calls to town hall engineers to treat the drains because of the disgusting smell coming from the sewer outlet higher up Hill Street. Things can only get worse and we have a voice that should be listened to.

Those who do care about the future of Summerseat came out to voice their opinions at the meeting on October 26. I sincerely hope that more people will come together "as a village" for the second meeting on November 9 to lend support to a local cause that affects us all.

This is the thin end of the wedge and should be stopped now!

K. & S. PATTEN,

Hill Street,

Summerseat.
