STAFF at the Cemetery Chippy in Colne are celebrating after finishing runners-up in the regional final of the Chip Shop of the Year competition.

Fish fryers Les and Val Scott and their son-in-law Simon Stuart received a certificate to prove they are the second best chippy in the North West.

They made it through to the regional round of the competition, organised by the National Association of Fish Fryers and the Scotland-based Seafish Industries, fighting off close to 800 other competitors.

Les and Val have been at the chippy in Keighley Road for 11 years, bringing the shop back to success after a serious fire last year put them out of business for 17 weeks. They were joined by Simon three years ago.

Simon said: "We were in the last three out of 800 which is marvellous.

"Sometime in November we can ring up to find out how far behind the winners we were and what we lost out on.

"We are very pleased and we will be going back in for the competition next year to try and get further."
