A SUPPORT service for witnesses giving evidence at magistrates courts in Lancashire has been launched.
The witness service was unveiled by Dame Helen Reeves, chief executive of Victim Support, at Lancashire Police headquarters on Saturday.
Fivebranch managers have been appointed to run the new service. Their first task will be to recruit volunteers who will be based in all the magistrates courts across the county.
The volunteers will be trained to provide emotional support and practical information about court proceedings to help witnesses, as well as victims and their friends and families, before, during and after the hearing.
Brian Turner, chairman of Victim Support Lancashire, said: 'The vast majority of criminal prosecutions in this country are dealt with in magistrates courts. Hundreds of distressed and anxious people pass through their doors every day.
"They will now be able to receive support, information and assistance from the witness service at the time of a trial.
"We have been greatly encouraged by the welcome we have received from the magistrates court staff who recognise, as much as we do, the urgent need for this vital service."
Victim Support Lancashire was formed in April by the amalgamation of eight former district schemes.
