Nature watch with Ron Freethy
NOW that the dark misty nights are with us many of our mammals fall victims to road accidents.
Last week I saw a badger lying dead on the side of the road near Gisburn and this week I saw a fox which had been killed on the road leading over Pendle from Sabden.
Other regular victims are brown hares, roe deer and, of course rabbits and, until they have all hibernated, hedgehogs.
Many of our mammals reach their highest populations following the summer breeding season.
The adults, once the young start to become independent, chase the adolescents out of their territory.
Many young animals wander about in a confused manner and so easily fall victim to road traffic accidents.
Apart from our usual spy records I would welcome reports of road traffic accidents involving our East Lancashire mammals. It may well be possible to highlight which of our local routes present the most danger.
