A SERVICE of Thanksgiving is to be held in memory of the man who started Freemasonry in Padiham.

Freemasonry was started in the town 125 years ago by Col Le Gendre Nicholas Starkie who was the Provincial Grand Master.

He died in 1899 and the service at St Leonard's Church on Friday is being held as a tribute to his memory and to that of other prominent Freemasons of Padiham.

District Press officer Jim Sutcliffe said the Starkie family worshipped regularly at St Leonard's and gave generous support to the church over many years.

A donation will be made to the church fabric fund during Friday's service.
