MEMBERS of Burnley Youth Theatre have secured a grant of more than £58,614 from the North West Arts Board.

The Regional Arts Lottery Programme made six awards totalling £131, 219 for community arts projects.

The theatre's Making Waves project will increase access to the arts for young people of East Lancashire through performing arts activities and will provide training for people such as teachers who want to run their own drama classes.

Jacky Riddell, arts director, said: "The money will cover two and a quarter years of specific arts projects which allows us to keep staff in their posts.

"We are starting an over-16 workshop looking at developing skills such as directing and devising their own work, as well as continuing working with people with disabilities and young people of Asian heritage,

"We will also be doing a number of performance projects each year and a skills workshop for all age groups. We also hope to do one national project each year.

"At the end of the project we will commission two professional writers to write a play which will be performed by young people."
