IT'S an obscure little dot on the map, but Im told that Gun Site Lane had a key role in defending the truly rural landscape of Crank, Rainford, Billinge and Moss Bank during the second world war.
Apparently this was the location of an anti-aircraft gun just off Crank Road, beyond the Fairfield private hospital. And thus the lanes unique name.
Pensioner R. H. of Moss Bank brought this little-known fact to my attention, explaining that the gun was based there, along with searchlights, to pick off any German bombers that might appear overhead.
And he begs the question: "Were there any other ack-ack bases in and around St Helens? I don't know of any. Perhaps your readers can help?"
