Chorley 0 Squires Gate 1

CHORLEY suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of minnows Squires Gate and were deservedly dumped out of the Marsden Lancashire Challenge Trophy in the first round.

The Magpies' performance was simply woeful as they failed to match the young North West Counties Second Division side's mobility, organisation and work rate.

There was a taste of what was to come in the 11th minute when Simon Marsh saved desperately with an outstretched leg from Paul Paynter and then hesitancy by Nick Fisher when cleverly set up in front of goal cost Chorley their best chance of the night.

Centre back Steve Ormson blasted Squires Gate ahead after 40 minutes with a speculative 30-yard strike which went in off the post. Soon afterwards Marsh again had to use his legs to keep out Scott Bradford's stinging low drive.

Though the belated introduction of substitutes Gary Mills and Damien Corcoran pumped some life into the Magpies in the last half hour, Gareth Gray was not tested in the visitors' goal.

Chorley were nevertheless denied the most blatant of penalties when David Eatock was brought down as he raced clear into the box but Blackburn referee Neil Yates waved away the protests.

Apart from that Squires Gate looked more likely to grab a second and only a fine covering tackle by Paul Fleming halted Scott Sugden as he was all set to round off a flowing build up.
