A COMBINATION of sound academic achievement and practical experience has given Alex Peers the perfect grounding for a successful career in engineering following an intensive three-year Modern Apprenticeship with Waterside Training, funded by St Helens Chamber.

Alex (21) joined Pirelli (Rod and Wire) in Prescot after successfully obtaining GCSEs and A-levels at Rainford High School. He has excelled throughout his apprenticeship and he is now well on his way to gaining his Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering at John Moores University.

Les Garner, personnel manager at Pirelli (Rod and Wire), said: "Alex has combined a strong academic background with high-level practical experience. We are very pleased with the progress he has made already and it is expected he will be undertaking a senior engineering position in the near future."

A spokesman for St Helens Chamber explained that many young people obtain excellent positions by mixing academic qualifications and practical experience valued by the employer. He added: "Alex is an example of how Modern Apprenticeships are not just for 16-year-old school leavers, but are an opportunity for those under 24 years of age."
