A LOCAL Labour Party stalwart has resigned from the party over the Government's stance on education.
Cllr Brian Penney, who represents Skerton West ward, says he has been forced into the decision by national issues, mainly relating to education.
He is no longer a member of the Labour Group on the city council.
The former head at Ryelands Primary School said that he is reflecting on whether or not to resign from the City Council.
He stressed that his resignation is over national issues and that he has quarrel with the local Labour Party or particular quarrel with the Labour group.
Cllr Abbott Bryning, Leader of the local Labour Group, said: "I regret very much Brian's decision to resign. Unfortunately, this is mainly over issues over which we have no control."
