TO the residents of Lancaster's Ridge Estate, PC Tim Dodgson is more than just their local community bobby - he's also their friend.

It's a friendship that has built up over the last couple of years during which Tim has launched a special newspaper, opened his own police office and run football competitions for the youngsters on the estate.

And in recognition of his hard work Lancashire Constabulary has awarded him the prestigious George Herbert Redman Trophy which is given to officers who promote a better public understanding of the role of the police.

Tributes were paid to Tim's community work by Deputy Chief Constable Paul Stephenson when he handed over the trophy during a special ceremony.

PC Dodgson said: "This award has been a great honour for me and I am extremely pleased that I was nominated for such an important trophy. I enjoy my work and I am glad I have the opportunity to contribute something to thew community that makes up my beat on the Ridge estate and the Bulk area."

Since becoming the beat officer, PC Dodgson has worked closely with the tenants association and housing officers to try and sort out local problems.

He's also given support and backing for a drop in cafe for youngsters and organised football matches in a bid to stop youths congregating on the streets.

A free local newsletter called the Ridge Informant has kept people up to date with local developments and he's also set up a mail box facility so that residents can stay in touch.

As well as the trophy, PC Dodgson was awarded £450 which he has decided to donate to the Bradbury Cystic Fibrosis Unit.
