LEIGH RMI have made a transatlantic addition to their squad by landing former Wanderers defender Nicky Spooner.

Spooner, 29, has joined RMI from American outfit Charleston Battery and was in the squad for last Saturday's draw at Woking. He is also expected to be in contention for Sunday's FA Cup first round tie at Millwall.

Spooner has battled back after badly breaking his leg playing for Wanderers at Burnley in 1994, spending almost 18 months on the sidelines before returning to skipper Bolton's reserves and eventually taking up a lucrative contract with Charleston Battery.

He skippered Battery when they won the American A-League last season to become champions of the Atlantic Division. Explains manager Steve Waywell: "Nicky lives near me and when he returned from Amaerica asked if he could come down to Leigh. He's been training with us for about a month and has looked very sharp.

"At the moment he's on a week-to-week contract. That's to let him look at us and and we'll look at him. At the moment that suits both parties but hopefully we'll soon be in a position to offer him something permanent."
