SIXTH form students at a Lytham school have received a personal insight into the current tensions in the Middle East.

As part of their general studies programme the lower sixth form at King Edward VII and Queen Mary School welcomed John Levy from the Friends of Israel Trust.

Mr Levy explained the origins of modern-day Israel to his audience and then took part in a lively debate with his audience.

Michael Stephenson, head of sixth form, said much of the debate came from the different viewpoints of the religions represented by both the pupils and Mr Levy.

"Our Muslim students put forward a rather different interpretation on the Middle East situation compared to Mr Levy's Jewish viewpoint," he said.

"And so it was a very thought-provoking debate."
