THE memory of tragic pupil Michael Gregory was kept alive at the Westleigh High School annual presentation evening last night.

Peter and Kath, parents of the 13-year-old who was killed in a road accident on a Leigh by-pass crossing in January, presented a trophy to be awarded to the Young Scientist of the Year.

And Peter's employers, the Royal Mail, have sponsored a trophy for the Sportsperson of the Year.

The prizes were handed over to the winning pupils James Paul and outstanding cross country runner Adele Swanton, by the family.

Michael, a Year Eight student, died as the result of the accident at the Westbourne Avenue junction.

Guest speaker at the event was Mr Chris Rogan, international director of education liaison for BAe Systems, who presented the prizes and certificates.

Another highlight of the event was the presentation of the Chair of Governors Trophy and an ABK laptop to one of the highest achieving students, Louise Barnett, and the BAe Systems silver salver to the best mathematics and science student, Andrew Smith.

In his address, headteacher Mr John Pout spoke of the tremendous strides being made by the school.

He highlighted the building programmes and the quality of the facilities, teachers and relationships as being the keys to the success of the school.

He said: "To achieve this success we have to continue to work in true partnership -- within the family of schools in the borough, within the family of the community, and with our families to allow our children to achieve greater things."
