THE dangers of storing petrol have been highlighted by Blackburn with Darwen Council.

Despite reassurances that there will be no disruption to supplies, some people are storing fuel.

The council says this is potentially hazardous and in some circumstances can be illegal.

However, the environmental health department want to help people determined to store legal quanitities of petrol with advice on the best ways of doing so.

If petrol is to be stored for use in the engine of a car or lawn mower, then for most domestic situations the maximum amount of petrol that can be legally stored is either two 10-litre metal containers or two five-litre plastic containers.

It is recommended that people use containers made specifically for this purpose.
