BRIAN Gregory, chairman of the Association of British Drivers, draws our attention to the Millennium Dome now being a "car friendly zone" and relies on this to promote further provision for the motor car (Your Letters, Nov 10).

However, the motor car, used in the way Mr Gregory and his followers try hard to encouragewhich is without restriction on use or speed is selfish and destructive and is neither economy-friendly nor environmentally-friendly. And it certainly isn't "child-friendly," the one thing the vast majority profess to care and provide for, indeed live for. For many the chaos and devastation of the last few weeks, fuel crises, rail crises and flood crises, is largely due to the unrestricted use of and over-reliance on motor vehicles. The fuel crises are due to high taxes caused by accidents, congestion and pollution; rail crises are due to dismantling and under-investment because preference was given to road transport; flood crises are due to global warming, much of it attributed to pollution from cars.

For all their popularity, cars have devastated many lives and threatened the economy of the entire country. Or could it simply be the people that drive them?

Experts think it likely that weather conditions will get worse in the future, with possibly even more devastation. If the Government listens to the Association of British Drivers, we can be sure of it!

There needs to be more consideration and moderation in the way we use our cars, with better provision made for the future of our children, the next generation.
