BROWNIES are using paddle power to earn their "water wings" thanks to the generosity of an East Lancashire firm.

Aerospace giant BAE Systems, which employs 4,000 people at Samlesbury, donated £400 to the 58th Burnley and 1st Habergham Brownie packs, which are based at Wellfield Church Primary School and All Saints churches respectively. The money was used towards buying a canoe.

The girls and their leaders have teamed up with the Pendle Paddlers canoe group to learn more about canoeing. They have bee using the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Foulridge, near Colne, and Pendle Wavelengths swimming pool, Nelson, for training.

Debbie Stott, community relations adviser at BAE Systems, said: "It's good to see the money being put to good use. The children are learning new skills, building confidence and having fun in the process." The donation came from the company's Girl Guide Association Lancashire Award scheme. Any Association group can apply for up to £400 as long as the project it is funding falls within the categories of the environment, youth activities, heritage or crime prevention. There is a similar scheme for the Scouts.
