A POLICEWOMAN who swore at a man in a nightclub and made a statement which was contradicted by video evidence in court has been disciplined by force bosses.

PC Kate Weaver received two reprimands and a caution from Chief Constable Pauline Clare yesterday for abuse of authority, and falsehood or prevarication.

The hearing followed an incident after officers were called to the Afrika's nightlcub in Blackburn Road, Accrington, in November 1998.

Today police bosses assured the man at the centre of the allegations that he would be treated like any other member of the public after he said he feared other officers may shun him.

Tsagher Mahmood, of Oxford Close, Blackburn said: "I don't know how the police will react to me. It could swing either way. They could approach me with caution or they may not help me at all. That is the fear I have today."

He is also very unhappy at the hearing's decision: "I think she should have been sacked, she did not face a charge over the statement given to the court and that is the worst part of the case."

PC Weaver alleged Mr Mahmood swore at her before he was arrested.

However, in February 1999, on his fifth appearance at Hyndburn Magistrates Court, Mr Mahmood was cleared after CCTV footage from the club caught PC Kennedy swearing at him. The charge of threatening behaviour was dropped. A charge of resisting arrest was dropped at a previous hearing.

The constable, who is based at Accrington Police station, faced the three-day hearing this week and Mr Mahmood, 27, was called to give evidence.

Mr Mahmood voiced his concerns about the venue of the hearing -- the force headquarters in Hutton.

"It was very intimidating, I felt like 4,000 people were staring at me. I think matters such as this should be held at a neutral location."

A spokesman for Lancashire Police assured Mr Mahmood he would be treated just like everyone else but would not comment on his grievances about the hearing.

They did however comment on the result.

"Lancashire Constabulary can confirm a police constable appeared before the Chief Constable at a disciplinary hearing and as a result was reprimanded on two counts and cautioned on another. A further disciplinary charge was dismissed."
