SINCE the first modern apprentice joined a Leigh bakery he has cooked up a storm by coming third in a national competition and now he is moving into management.
Richard Lloyd, 24, recently completed Waterfields first modern apprenticeship and is set to go on a management training course.
But Richard says it was an "accident" that he started work at the bakery six years ago.
"It was all down to luck that I ended up here. I used to work for Wigan Borough Council but when my YTS ended I just happened to get a holiday job at the bakery and have been here ever since. I never really set-out at first to become a baker, it was just an accident really to get a foot in the door and I have never looked back."
In this year's baking industry awards Richard came third in the young baker category. But in 1998 he won the Pierre Sciacco award which took him on a four day trip to Switzerland.
Company chairman Richard Waterfield said he was delighted with Richard's progress.
"We always place great emphasis on staff development and it is pleasing that Richard has embraced this in such an enthusiastic manner."
