EX-POSTMAN and current Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen Jack Bury paid a return visit to one of the borough's sorting offices to see behind scenes at the Royal Mail's busiest time of year.

Coun Bury was himself a postman for 14 years, based at Mason street sorting office, until he retired just over 30 years ago on health grounds. But he said he was pleased to be able to return to see how things have changed in the way our mail is sorted and makes its way from post box to letter box.

Coun Bury said: "Things are different now.

"There is a different kind of mail and more bulky items than there used to be. But it was very interesting for me and nice to see the workforce who are doing a sterling job with the Christmas post."

The Mayor added: "I marvelled at the speed at which they did the sorting."
