THE head of Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School, Blackburn, Dr David Hempsall lambasts the UK's examination system, calling it "a disgrace" (LET, December 8).

Then he tells the assembled multitude how well his pupils have done!

He has a remedy -- change to the International Baccalaureate, as, for example, Lonbridge School (of Colin Cowdrey fame!) do.

Of course, he is wrong. Even he admits that the recent HM Chief Inspector of Schools Chris Woodhead, went over the top.

He might like to think who dominates the exam industry in the UK.

My experience, since the early 1970s, with every England and Welsh examination board, tells me that independent school personnel dominate the higher posts in examining.

The old grammar schools, the ex-Grand Maintained, or whatever they are now, and the public schools have more than their fair share of chief and principal examiners.

Do none of Dr Hempsall's staff operate in the system?
