A BRAVE schoolgirl saved her mother's life by her quick actions after she collapsed into a diabetic coma.

Catherine Morrison, aged eight, dialled 999, gave her mum first aid -- and even tried to raise her blood sugar levels by giving her chocolate biscuits and milk.

Her actions have amazed ambulance chiefs who have praised her courage.

And to reward Catherine, of Leigh Road, Howe Bridge, Atherton, the ambulance service has given her and mother Gillian, 42, free tickets to see the group Steps perform at the Manchester Arena tonight and even meet the stars backstage.

Greater Manchester Ambulance chief John Burnside has also personally thanked Catherine, describing her actions as "exceptional".

The St Michael's CE Primary School pupil treated her mother on the floor after she collapsed in a bedroom at their Atherton home and also dialled 999 for an ambulance before calling her father at work.

She even told the 999 operator that the ambulance crew would have to enter her home through the back because she could not unlock the front door.

Catherine said: "I didn't panic because I wasn't really thinking of anything. I was just thinking, 'my mum's going to be OK'."

Her grateful mother, who has suffered from diabetes since the age of 13, said: "I was too weak to move. The last thing I remember she was opening the chocolate biscuits and trying to feed me. She realised it was more than a mild attack.

"Most young children would have panicked and waited for help to arrive. I didn't even realised she knew half the things she did about my condition. She told them exactly what I needed and how my body would react to certain things."

Greater Manchester Ambulance Service chief executive John Burnside said: "She was obviously very concerned for her mum but was in total control of the situation. Her actions were exceptional and much appreciated."

Mrs Morrison added: "She was marvellous. She saved my life. If she had left it any longer goodness knows what might have happened.

Catherine, who has also had a bravery certificate from her school, is excited about seeing Steps.

She said: "It's all really good. I have been learning their names because I only know the music. I'm going to take my autograph book. My grandad has given me my Steps video Christmas present early so that I can learn the dancing. I'm so excited." Catherine Morrison and mum Gillian Ref: H4854/21
