Portico Panthers 16 Ulverston 8

PORTICO continued their solid start to the season in the North West Counties League Premier Division with this hard-fought success.

The homesters got off to a flying start with a try after just five minutes, half-backs Dave Lee and Keith Tunstall creating the gap for Dave Glynn to go over at the corner. Then strong running by the pack set the platform before Lee Cunningham chipped over the defensive line and followed up to score another unconverted try.

Ulverston had plenty of pressure but great defence by Portico restricted them a penalty goal, making it 8-2 at half-time.

Portico again started well after the break with big Chris Ashurst paving the way for Stu Graham to slide over in the corner. But Ulverston hit back straight away, scoring close to the posts and adding the conversion to make it 12-8.

The Portico pack then got on top again, allowing Lee and Tunstall to call the shots before a determined run by Dave Leyland brought him the home side's fourth touchdown.

In the closing stages Ulverston again put pressure on the Portico line but good defence kept them at bay.

This was a top team effort by Portico with Chris Ashurst and Stu Graham sharing the man-of-the-match award just ahead of Lee, Tunstall and Craig Peel.
