MERSEYSIDE Police are launching a high profile operation to keep visitors and workers in St Helens town centre safe during the festive season.

Assistant Chief Constable Grahame Barker launched the Safeshopper 2000 initiative at St Helens Police Station at the beginning of the week.

And Superintendent Richard Williams, St Helens Area Commander, said: "This operation is designed to target crime, increase public confidence and reduce the fear of crime. We are working to ensure that everyone has an enjoyable festive season.

"We are determined to make St Helens a safer place for all the public. I would urge people to work with us and to help make this operation a success."

The initiative will target violent crime, vehicle crime and thefts both during the day and evening. Officers will carry out high visibility policing patrols and use the town centre CCTV to identify offenders.

Police are aiming to cut crime and reduce the fear of crime among visitors and residents in St Helens.
