NORTH West motorsport's annual antidote to turkey and tinsel, the Gibson's of Brock Rally, looks set to be a Christmas cracker.

Belmont businessman Rob Barry heads a capacity entry for the all-tarmac event at the Park Hall leisure complex near Charnock Richard, and will be aiming for his hat-trick after back-to-back wins in 1998 and 1999.

But lining up to stop the Mitsubishi man are a host of top local clubmen, including Ken Skidmore (Subaru Impreza), Dave Preece (Porsche 911), Robin Farrington (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo4) and Duncan Taylor (Escort Cosworth).

Organisers Bolton-le-Moors Car Club have joined forces with Bury Automobile Club to stage this year's event on Saturday December 30, and reverted to its original format of a one-day rally with scrutineering on Friday evening.

"We are expecting a full-house entry for what is a very popular event in the area for both competitors and spectators, " said spokesman Guy Wickham.

"This year we will not be using the large gravel car park adjoining the complex as it has cut up badly in recent years. Instead we are utilising the tarmac perimeter roads, which will give us around ten special stages totalling 23 miles.

"As well as the usual features of the event, which include reduced accomodation rates and excellent spectator facilities, we are once again holding the very popular rally disco after scrutineering, although local competitors can return home overnight if they wish as there are no parc ferme restrictions.

"We are also grateful for the support of Subaru and Isuzu dealers Gibson's of Brock who have agreed to sponsor the rally yet again."

Last minute entries are still available from secretary Peter Sharples (tel: 01772 626116) and the organisers would also like to hear from anyone wnting to help with marshalling duties, contact Graham Bray (tel: 0161 796 9079)

Spectators are welcome, with entry to the Park Hall complex just £5 per car, including programme and entry list. A full range of catering facilities will be provided.
