THE St Helens schools representative teams enjoyed mixed fortunes at the weekend.
In the fourth round of the Heinz National Cup, the under 15s entertained Salford at Ruskin Drive aiming for a place in the last 16.
With the sides evenly-matched the game remained goalless at half-time, although St Helens looked unlucky to have a goal disallowed for a marginal offside decision.
The second half saw Salford take the lead but St Helens replied with a Phil Dixon free-kick. Then, with 10 minutes remaining and extra-time looming, Salford scored what proved to be the winner.
The Primary team fared far better against Kirkby in the last 16 of the North-West Cup. After a bright start Martin Seddon (Haydock English Martyrs) fired in a terrific goal from a Chris Dykes (St Peters) cross.
The visitors had few chances but early in the second half made one count with a low driven shot to equalise.
However, St Helens bounced straight back with a superb chipped shot from Daniel Lewis (St. John Vianney). The same player then flighted in a free-kick to make it 3-1 and Daniel Lynch (St Thomas of Canterbury) finished off a great team move with style, firing into the top corner to complete the scoring.
The man-of-the-match was jointly awarded to John Jackson (St John Vianney) and Martin Waring (StTeresa's).
