Prescot Cables 1 Oadby Town 1 (aet) CABLES' much-delayed FA Carlsberg Trophy third round tie against Midland Alliance champions Oadby Town finally went ahead and despite the heavy pitch both sides produced some excellent football with honours even after extra time.

Prescot got off to a flying start when a long ball from Colin Weston deceived two defenders and Gary Jensen nipped in behind to steer past Jason Trinder in the Oadby goal.

They were unable to capitalise on that opening, however, and the game was evenly contested in the first half with solid defending preventing any clear-cut chances.

Oadby's best effort came midway through the half when Prescot keeper Paul Dahl produced a fine save to push a 25-yard drive from Steve Kee around the post.

But within two minutes of the restart the visitors were level when Andy Tiday created space on the edge of the box and fired in a shot that Dahl got a hand to but couldn't stop.

Dahl made another fine save 15 minutes later to keep out a 20-yard effort from Kee, then Jensen went close for Prescot when he held off two defenders but pulled his shot narrowly wide.

In the final 20 minutes of the half, it was Oadby who looked the most threatening and it took impressive displays from Lee Riley and John Igglesden in the centre of Prescot's defence to keep the visitors at bay.

The first period of extra time also belonged to Oadby but once again Dahl was imperious as he made saves from Tiday and Richard Walker.

In the second period of extra time it was Prescot who went closer to scoring with Andy Hayes being denied by a fine save from Trinder and a cross by Riley resulting in a melee in the Oadby box before the ball was eventually hacked away to safety.

The replay is scheduled for Saturday, December 23.
