SPORTS companies in Lancashire are being invited to take part in a trade mission to South Africa as part of a bid to gain the most economic potential from the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.

The mission, which will be held from February 13-22, is being organised by the Commonwealth Economic Benefits team based at the Manchester Investment and Development Agency Service (MIDAS).

Places for up to 20 businesses specialising in sports, ranging from construction firms for stadia to clothing and equipment suppliers, are available.

They will meet potential clients from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and Durban as well as being invited to take part in a two-day sports seminar organised by the British Council and the South Africa Football Association.

A spokesman said: "This is an excellent way for Lancashire's businesses to gain an introduction to prospective clients in South Africa and a platform to finding long-term business opportunities."

With the Commonwealth Games 18 months away, organisers said it was the perfect time for the sports industry to make the most of potential business.
