BUSINESS and tourism in East Lancashire will receive a boost when Manchester Airport's controversial second runway is opened in February.

The airport is a major hub for local businesses and the new £172million runway will allow millions of extra passengers to use Manchester.

Valerie Miles, company secretary at the East Lancashire Chamber of Commerce, said: "The impact on inward tourism and investment will be very significant.

"Perhaps even more importantly it recognises the importance of the North West which will help boost the region."

"This new runway will enable Manchester to maintain its status as a world class airport," said its chief executive Geoff Muirhead.

"Manchester Airport already makes a massive contribution to the region's economic and social well-being and developments like the second runway will ensure the North West remains an attractive prospect for investment.

"The development is absolutely critical to our ability to handle more passengers in the years to come."

Airport chairman Brian Harrison added: "Our new runway is of vital importance, not just to the airport but to the North West as a whole.

"It is clear that this runway is one of the most significant developments for the region in recent times and will be a tremendous boost for the North West in so many ways; for worldwide travel, for tourism, for economic benefits, for jobs and industry and for our cultural and social enhancement."
