BLACKPOOL'S road safety experts are warning parents to make sure their children wear reflective clothing when out playing on their scooters this Christmas.

The town's road safety officers are highlighting the importance of being seen and riding safely when out on the streets after dark.

The micro scooters -- one of this year's most popular Christmas presents -- are not fitted with lights or reflective strips of any kind and drivers might not be able to see scooter riders clearly. Officers are suggesting children decorate their scooter with reflective tape for added visibility after reports from America revealed injuries to under 15s increased by 700 per cent after the introduction of mini scooters.

Roy Fisher, Blackpool Council's deputy leader, said: "Very often children think they can beat the car because they can travel a little bit faster on a scooter than when they are walking. Children should be advised to always walk a scooter across the road. Dashing out from between a parked car on a scooter is just as dangerous if not more so than stepping out."

Basic armbands are still available for just £1 from Blackpool Borough Council and other high visibility aids are available from bike shops and other retailers.
