QUESTION marks are hanging over the future of two Lancashire police units after bosses ordered an internal review of their services.
The review of the Mounted Branch and the Underwater Search Units is part of an ongoing process to improve the efficient running of the force.
But police bosses have stressed the review does not necessarily mean services will be cut or withdrawn.
A police spokesman said: "An internal review of both the Mounted Branch and the Underwater Search Unit is currently taking place. This is part of an ongoing process across the Constabulary to ensure it continues to provide an effective, efficient and economical service to the people of Lancashire."
They added that the review would include wide-ranging consultation with both those who provide the services and people who use them. Other forces which have undertaken similar reviews will also be consulted.
There are currently 28 officers and seven support staff such as grooms and stable hands in the Mounted Branch and eight officers and one support staff in the Underwater Search Unit. The search unit is shared between Lancashire and Cumbria.
The spokesman added: "In short it is about how we make best use of our resources."
Once the report on the two branches is completed it will be submitted to the force's Business Group for consideration.
