HAVING read Mr Steven Barker's comments (Sports Letters, December 12) regarding the amalgamation of Burnley FC and Blackburn Rovers FC and increased gates being the end result, the phrase "Hell will freeze over first" is perhaps the best I can come up with for a family newspaper.

As a Burnley supporter for 39 years, I would walk away from football before joining forces with the Rovers, and I would suggest so would the vast majority of Rovers' supporters.

Mr Barker indicates he is a Rovers supporter. But what sort of Rovers' supporter, bearing in mind the fervour with which both local clubs are supported, would even consider such ideas?

In my view he appears to miss the most important point of supporting "our" team -- loyalty, a point which I feel will be lost on him.

One final point for Mr Barker to ponder: Would capacity stadium make football available to all supporters? I think not.

Season ticket prices would rocket and waiting lists appear -- two points which I'm sure both Burnley and Rovers supporters would agree on, and not want.
