IN a desperate attempt to reignite his flagging electoral fortunes William Hague has now promised to lower taxation while at the same time keep to Labour's commitment to key public services.

How can this be achieved? Quite simply by cutting 10 per cent from the budget of the civil service. A total of £1.8 billion has been earmarked to be slashed "across the board" from the civil service budget.

The effect of such a reduction on the Fylde Coast's economy -- an area with a massive dependency on civil service jobs -- would be nothing short of devastating.

The Tories need to spend more time thinking through the consequences of their pledges before making commitments which owe more to small-minded dogma than common sense.
